Traditions
This time of year we all seem to rely on our family traditions to keep us comforted during the holidays. At least I do. I love to have those traditions to fall back on and I also have had fun the last few year altering them slightly to fit us better since we don't have family around.
We start in November with Thanksgiving. It was always a big spread at our house with all the traditional trimmings. I still try and make it a big spread, but now we invite friends to share with us. My MIL started the tradition of having appetizers before dinner and we still have yummy ones here. My mom always made turkey AND stuffing and I will not deviate from that. My grandma always had cream corn, and it is my favorite. This year we started our family tablecloth, and a few years ago we started deep frying our turkey.
For Christmas we have a live tree. I know most of you don't in blog land. I remember when I was young my parents bought a fake tree, I think I was 12 or 13 (before that always real). We put it up that year and it just didn't feel like Christmas. The next year my brother and I decided to surprise mom and dad while they were out shopping by setting up said fake tree and decorating it. Mom and dad ended up coming home with a real tree on top of the car, they couldn't take another year with the dang fake tree. So it sat in our garage for about 6 years and they finally got rid of it. So we are real tree foke!
I always pull out all of our old ornaments, some homemade and some store bought but none match and there is not a theme. I put on lights and the kids decorate while Chris films. The kids favorite ornaments include the Christmas Pickle, and the Christmas Spider. Mine include my ballerina I got when I was 8, and the angel my mom made the year I had my first very own tree. Chris' are his Superman in a phone booth, and Star Trek.
This year we actually had a baking day. I always envy those that bake many good treats for Christmas and this year I did it. It wasn't as elaborate as some but for us it was just fine.
Last year we started the tradition of having milk shakes for breakfast. So tomorrow I will get to use my new blender (compliments of State Farm Select a Gift!). We really uncomplicate dinner by getting Papa Murphy's pizza and eating it the rest of the day. Then after lunch we hit the theater. There's always some cute kid friendly movie that comes out of Christmas day. This year we are going to see Bedtime Stories with Adam Sandler.
Our traditions seem strange to some but they work for us. I hope that everyone has wonderful family traditions and are making new ones every year. Just because something was done a certain way for generations doesn't mean a change is not good. I love blending my families ways with Chris' it's been so fun over the years making the two seem like one.
If you have any fun or interesting traditions let me know I love to steal people's ideas!
I know I won't blog tomorrow (I'm not that blog addicted) so I hope you all have a very Merry Christmas, and remember the reason for the season.
