Life's a Playa
I was looking through the pictures on my camera and realized that there were some things that I forgot to blog about and don't want to forget so I'm gonna back track a minute before I get to La Playa!!!
The other night when we were on our way to the observatory we stopped at a lake over looking the city. There was a big dam and we could walk up on it and have a great view of the river and the Andes.
I thought this was so cute with his shadow behind him. He didn't want to walk because it moved with him. It's kinda like his good twin...J/K...a little.
This was a piece of art that was designed by the students at the university that was fashioned after an ancient Mapuche (spelling is wrong I'm sure) hieroglyph. When the wind blew through it it made a strange sound. L was afraid of it and wouldn't walk past it himself.
Ok, enough about that dam!
Today was pretty fun. We went again to the Recova, a square in the middle of town where there was lots of fun shopping to do. We went the other day with Esparanza but it was a week day and I had no idea how crowded it gets on the weekends. People everywhere! We were able to get some fun things and also got behind another protest. Apparently the people here like their protests, they were dancing and singing, and playing drums. It got very loud and scared the children. Another thing to note is that here in Chile it is winter, therefore they think it's cold even though they are having a very unusually warm winter where the temperatures are only about 10 degrees different from their typical summers. The people are all wearing sweaters and scarves and their babies are bundled up in blankets and snow suits (no kidding), and it's around 65 degrees. So everywhere we go they ask us if we are cold because we are wearing short sleeves. The first day in Chile I got stopped by so many people worried about the baby because he had no shoes on that I went and bought a pair for him to wear out, since I had forgotten his at home. They also think that if you go shoeless that you will become ill. Anyhoo today I wore flip flops because I knew we were going to the beach after shopping and I don't wear tennis shoes to the beach. People were looking at me like I was crazy, during the protest I crossed the street and was right in front of what I think was a news camera...I bet I made national news as the "Gringa" wearing sandals in WINTER!
The day that I had been waiting for finally arrived. THE PLAYA!!! I love the beach, grew up going there every week or so during the summer, took my kids there camping when we lived close, and it's one of my first stops when I come to visit California. I love the beach. We only stopped for a few minutes to stick our toes in but I could have spent the whole day there just watching the waves. The kids would have been in up to their necks if I had let them, L too and that is what stressed me out, he had no fear even though he had never really seen the ocean before and the waves were twice his size...NO FEAR!
This was the face he made the whole time, I think that's his "What in the H-E-Double Hockey Sticks" face. He didn't quite know what to think about it.
C got a bunch of shells to bring home, nothing too exciting just regular stuff.
Hoping we can go back there next week if just for a few more minutes!
Tonight we had another Chilean family over for dinner. The husband works with Daryl and they have 3 children. Jonathan speaks English pretty well but his wife Marleth does not speak much English at all. We got along fine and were able to communicate well. They have a little boy that is 3 and very much like L, active and energetic and let's face it a little crazy sometimes. They had a blast together, poor K was run ragged by the end of the night trying to keep them out of trouble. At the end of the night Marleth was putting on everyone's sweaters and she put her own on and had a wooden broach with a stick through it that held the sweater together at the top, very cute and I was so excited because I had seen these in town and didn't know what they were for. They look like they are for your hair but I couldn't figure out how they would work. Anyway I was excited and commented that I liked hers and that I would send Chris to get me one from the Recova on Monday, she took hers off right there and gave it to me as a gift. I can't believe how generous these people are here. So sweet and kind hearted. I will treasure it always! Now I just wish I had brought a sweater to wear to church tomorrow so I can show it off!
Still having a great time and I want to remember this forever! I also wish I had someone at home to speak Spanish to me because I've learned so much!
