O Registers For School

Today was Kindergarten registration for O. She was really excited about going. I kept telling her that it was going to be boring, just filling out papers and paying the registration (don't get me started on that subject, it's for anther rant post another time). She was still really excited about going. Since I thought it was going to be boring I didn't take a camera or anything. Well when we got there they took the kids while I filled out forms and paid (GRRRR) and had them coloring fun papers and taking an assessment test to see what they knew. She had a blast and did not want to leave. Her friend E was also there and they are hoping to be put into the same class. It's not like Ca where you can request teachers and classes. The Principal actually asked that we not ask for teachers. So now she's official and ready to start in August (except for the supplies, that's another rant) Mommy is really excited about the new school year.

Registration fees for public school??? You must post because I am now cranky on your behalf. As much as I HATE the education system in CA, at least there is no registration fee. Although, with our govenor... you never know what could happen.

We have had an interesting experience with Gordon's school. I like the school, Russell loathes many of the policies. I mean, I understand that Gordon is bored at school and because of No CHild Left Behind his teacher can only do so much to supplement his learning. What do you do with a kid that scores 100% on every test given during the year (district and class), but is socially not ready to be advanced a grade, entertains his classmates with wacky antics, and does not always complete classwork because it is just so easy? We are hoping that he will test into GATE and find more challenging work there.

Well the Illinois answer to your bored child problem would be "Homeschool", at least that's what my friends would say. I on the other hand would rather shoot myself in the foot than homeschool so I don't know the answer to that. Kelsey was that way in K-2 then 3rd hit and she suddenly has to work harder. So maybe it will work itself out, or maybe Gordon is just brilliant like his parents!

WHAT!?!?!?!? That's ridiculous.You must go into detail. Here, we are not allowed to ask for supplis (yet some schhols here do). It's an ed. code thing. A lot of CA schools do not take requests. I guess it depends on the district. There has to be a very good reason at my school for a request to be honored. More times than not the answer is no. Which is fine by me. It eliminates a lot of drama. Our Kindergarten Orientation is today and we are too gearing up for assessments in the next week. Some parents literally have to be told "Teach your kid to write their name or to count to 10, work on these items over the Summer" etc... I am glad to hear more and more schools are doing this.

Hey Willow, if one day I am a stay at home mom, I want to home school. My second oldest is gifted and my oldest is well above avg. I am lucky as my friends are their teachers and the will differentiate the curriculum for my kids/other high or low kids. That's why I pick them (employee perk). NCLB has done more harm than good and from what we are hearing it is dying a slow death (crowd cheering). I have to agree w/ Syndy, Once 4th grade hits, the whole student responsibility thing makes it rough on the kiddies and the are challenged in different ways (which is good).

Today we went to our new ward.  We still have one more week in our current ward but we just wanted to check it out, get our faces known, and possibly drum up some help to unload a moving truck in a couple weeks. Today is Chris Birthday! I'm awful about making plans and doing things for him so this year I have tried my best to be better. We are having a small party if you will , with some friends tonight and having his favorite apple cake with caramel topping. Sometimes life changes and we are all trying to catch up

From day one I could tell there was something different about L...he is my 4th child and right from the start I could tell.  I didn't know I could tell.  I knew he was different from my other kids but I didn't have a clue as to why, or what our future would bring. L was my most sweet baby.  All babies are sweet you say, all babies are different.  I know all babies are sweet but I mean this baby was SWEET.  He slept through the night almost from day one, to a mom 6 hours is like an eternity so I'm calling it through the night.  He rarely cried.  When he did and all the normal boxes were checked, feeding, changing, hot/cold, he just wanted to be left alone.  He would lay for hours on the floor on a blanket and watch life happen.  Then he would just fall asleep and take a nap and it was wonderful.  Being a mom of many kiddos it was like this baby was sent to me on purpose to make it easy.  Usually I have a baby and think "I'm not eve...
