I Love You School

I've pretty much been a slacker mom when it comes to getting my kids ready for kindergarten. K didn't know how to spell her name when she went to school, O only knew the things that K taught her while playing school, and C only knows what he's learned at preschool, and let's be honest here 1 1/2 hours 3 times a week is not much! So one of my "resolutions" this year is to work more with him to prepare him for school in the fall. He knows how to write his name (again not my doing) and knows some of the letters of the alphabet. So everyday for 30 minutes we are going to focus on one letter. I know 30 minutes does not sound like much but it's what I can commit to right now and really it's about the length of his attention span. Then the rest of the day will be reminding him about the letter and practicing what it sounds like and what kind of things start with that letter.

So today we started with A of course. He was so excited that we were doing school. I asked him what we should call our school and he decided it should be "I Love You School". He is such a sweet kid I'm going to miss him when he goes to regular school.

Maybe by the time he goes to kindergarten he will know stuff and I will have actually had a hand in making that happen. I'm a long way from being a homeschooling mom, (that would be comical) but I can do my small part.

I am a lot like you. I am even bad about remembering kessa's homework. I have been really thinking about this lately - I will need to get with the program for when she is in 1st grade.

I am going to jump in and help ya out here with some expert advice. 30 minutes is a bit much for a preschooler. The attention span of litle ones is their age plus two minutes. I don't teach lessons in K that last that long. Everyday is good, but 6-10 minutes should suffice. You'll want to rip your hair out if you go for thirty. Focus on a letter every few weeks so that he has the opportunity to commit the name, the sound , what it looks like and how to write it to memory. You'll be glad you spent the extra time to help get him ready. He'll have much success being ahead of the game and life will be easier for you in the long run. Have fun! You will treasure that one on one time together!

Well Jen, 30 minutes is the amount of time I devote to just focusing on him. Today the actual "learning" if you can call it that lasted about 7 minutes tops! The rest of the time was spent drawing pictures together, that had nothing to do with the letter we were learning. Mostly it's just a way to get to spend 1 on 1 time with him because he's been feeling a little left out lately. Thanks for the advice though it makes me feel like I'm not a failure if we only get through a few letters a month, and he forgets half of what we do!
