Anger Management

I'm going to type this post while I am still angry enough for the feeling to come out of the computer screen and slap you in the face so you can be angry with me too!!!!!!!!!

Didn't I JUST get done writing a post about how ridiculous it is buying supplies for our kids for school?  WELL, the fun continues.  Tonight I went to orientation and was sitting there listening to the teachers talk about homework and peer pressure, and lockers, and all the things that come with middle school.  THEN I was blindsided by the P.E. teacher (yes, she looked just like Ms. Finch my High School Gym teacher that had a window in her office over looking the girls locker room and covering that window was a picture of Morris the Cat and the eyes were cut out...VERY SUSPICIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!)  anyhoo...BLINDSIDED, by her when she told all of us parents how excited they were to have pulse monitors for the students this year that cost $200 each..................that is TWO HUNDRED AMERICAN DOLLARS!!!!!!!!!!! EACH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!  I don't know if I was the only  parent there that wanted to rip her throat out.  I was impressed that none of us stormed the stage and raged in protest.

Save the $200 pulse monitor and don't make me buy school supplies or pay a "book rental fee" (oh, and all the books are online this year so what the H-E-!-! are they using my $$$ for anyway??????????????)  I didn't have a pulse monitor in school and I didn't even have a heart attack!

p.s. sorry for the all caps, and exclamation points, and other excessive punctuation but you really need to be pi$$ed with me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know it may not help, but the pulse monitors may have been provided through a grant the teacher applied for. Most big things like that are not funded necessarily from the general fund, but from an equipment fund or a grant from an outside organization.
It's frustrating, but as a former teacher, I can tell you that they are truly grateful for all parents do to provide the things they need to enhance the opportunities for the kids.
Don't forget to breathe, we may need to get you a pulse monitor. I'll take up a collection. :)

I realize that I am not seeing both sides of the coin here. I just think that things like this are unnecessary and even though money may be granted or "earmarked" for certain purposes it's in my humble, all-be-it STRONG opinion a waste. The economy is in the tank, people are struggling to make ends meet and why can't they give us a break on our fees instead of tossing money into things like pulse monitors and geothermal power?

The other thing that stinks is that I have all these opinions and views and the only people who will ever hear it are the poor souls that read my blog! I guess it's cheaper than therapy.

I've calmed down now. Stood on my "blog-box" and had some chocolate, all is right with the world!!!

So I can't get mad about the $7 we got popped with from Matthew's new teacher because she decided to buy some supplies . . . which we could have gotten FREE for the whole stinking class!

I think you need to have a Bake Sale to help these kids pay for their monitors. I mean . . . what do you do if you don't have the money?!!!

Don't even get me started about teachers that buy things and then expect the parents to pick up the tab. We had one 3rd grade teacher that was famous for that I bet in total there was about $50 worth of "extras" that she had us pay for over the year. That's just not fair.

I think Joy is right...I don't think Unit 5 is dropping that much money on pulse monitors. I am sure it was a grant they applied for and the P.E. teacher was probably pretty pumped about it. Teachers are just normal family people on tight budgets and can't afford to spend hundreds of dollars on the extra things their classes need. They are only given so much money from the state/school to spend. My best friend from H.S. teaches school and drops a ton of her own money to make her classroom a better place. I feel extremely nickled and dimed by the end of every school year so I do feel your pain. School in England was FREE...they even provide all the school supplies...however...if you need back surgery in that country you might have to wait 2 years to get it so there is always a trade off. :)

Okay, I am saying this as a teacher myself. It is public education and it is funded by tax dollars. Everyone is entitled to a free and fair public education. So what about the students who aren't able to pay for the supplies???? I don't mind picking up a few things for my own kids, but there is such a thing as overboard. My district provides almost everything, and what they don't provide, I pay for.

I see both sides and I will leave it at that since lots have chimed in. What I hate is when you buy all this stuff and then you see it come back not even touched when they bring the supplies back home for the summer. The lists that keep coming and coming for more and more money. I am TOTALLY fine in doing things like this. The teachers are educating my children and I appreciate that ALOT. I just wish I had more of an idea upfront about all the activities and fees that will be coming along throughout the school year so I can have budgeted for it. Just sayin' Stepping off my school box and getting ready to try homeschooling 3 out of 4 of my kids this year. Wish me luck! It is a great program that is state funded and through our school district and they can even go do the sports and other extra curricular school stuff with the public school. I wish Unit 5 would have been more into doing that too!

Just say no!

I KNOW what you are saying: even if it's grant money, what kid NEEDS a heart rate monitor? The powers that be tell teachers and the general public that technology will make everything better. That money COULD be spent on books. Paper. Pencils. Shoot, it could buy a complete shorts, shirt, sports bra, socks and sneakers for PE.

Sounds like it's out of control. Maybe you should have a parent meeting, get all your thoughts together, and then attend the next school board meeting with an itemized list of supplies, costs, etc. You can get a copy of the school's budget (at least you can in CA- I believe I saw that online- it was a few years old, but still fairly current.) Make a standing with the board if the principal/superintendent is not sympathetic to your cause. You should have to buy some pencils and a binder/paper. You should not be buying your teacher's classroom.

Wish I could say something....but my head just exploded. Don't EVEN get me started about how much this state rips us off. Must...calm...down.
